Gazelle

by Judith Lile and Jim Sneed

 The Schoenhut Gazelles
The gazelle was introduced in 1909 as part of the Teddy Roosevelt set. Its production continued for many years after the Teddy Roosevelt sets were discontinued. Three designs are known - one glass eyes, and two painted eyes. A decal eyes gazelle has not been seen.

Painted eyes, carved head

The changeover to painted eyes began with a carved head version similar to that of the glass eyes gazelle. Note that the eye area, mouth, and nostrils are carved. The nostrils are "V" carved.

Painted eyes, molded head

The final style was made by molding the head and painting the eyes. There is no distinct eye socket and the "V" shaped nostrils were replaced with two small openings. Keller Style II - Rare
