Geese

by Judith Lile and Jim Sneed

The Schoenhut Geese
The goose was introduced in about 1908 with the farm animals. It came in two head designs. It is one of three animals that were never made in a glass eyed version. Can you name the other two?

Carved head

The earliest goose has a articulated carved head and wooden feet. Its eyes are painted. There are no glass eyes geese. This goose design has been photographed in a collection of 1920s PE animals, so it actually may be the second, not the first, design. We are looking for more evidence of its dates of production.

Molded head

Later, the geese's head was changed to a molded design. The eye pupils were painted brown instead of orange. This goose design may actually be the first design.

Yes, geese were used in circus acts.
