The Schoenhut Hobo Character Clowns
The hobo, or tramp, has been a popular character clown for many years. Schoenhut called this character simply "Hobo". To see more photos of hobos, go to our Hobo photo gallery here.

Black coat, plaid pants

The earliest Hobos wore a black and white plaid pant, a red and white striped shirt, a black hat, and a black coat. The scarf is reddish. Keller Style I - Very Rare

No mustache head

The earliest hobo style is also rarely found with no mustache. This example has a blue and white striped shirt and plaid pants. His hat is a reproduction made by Jim Sneed.

Grey coat, dark gray pants

This is an another example of an early two-part head hobo. Early hobos sported black hats. This hobo features a gray coat over gray pants.

Dark brown coat, black hat, circles shirt

A later and more common shirt for hobos was one whose pattern is an overall design of red circles.

The one-part head hobo wears a brown hat and a brown coat. Scarves are brown.

Euro Hobo
Possibly French, ca 1910. This figure is about 8 1/2 inches tall. Its head is two-part, similar to Schoenhut's early heads.  One example known.

Reduced Hobo

The reduced clown retained the overall design of the one-part head hobo - only smaller.
