Regular/Reduced

In the early 1920s, the A. Schoenhut Company introduced their reduced size (they also called it their small size) Humpty Dumpty circus. They advertised that this size was designed to fit small hands. It was also cheaper to make than the regular size circus. Not all regular size animals and actors were produced in the reduced size. A table below summarizes the pieces made in these two sizes. The following is a comparison of these two circuses.

A regular size giraffe stands about 7 inches to the withers and 11 inches to the top of his head. The reduced size stands about 5.25 inches to the withers and 7.5 inches to the top of his head.				Photo by Judith Lile The Goats The reduced goat is as well painted as its regular sized sister but is much rarer. The regular size goat stands about 7 inches to the top of his head. The regular Dude's hat is made of a cardboard-like material. The reduced Dude's hat is made of wood. Oddly, no reduced cane has been found. A regular size Dude stands about 8.7 inches to the top of his hat. The reduced Dude stands about 6 inches to the top of his head. The regular size lion shown stands about 5.75 inches to the top of his head. The reduced size lion shown stands about 4.5 inches to the top of his head.

A regular size elephant stands 6 inches to the withers while the reduced size stands about 4.5 inches to his withers. The reduced size donkey shown stands about 5.5 inches to the top of his head.

The reduced Hobo stands about 5.8 inches to the top of his head. The regular clown is about 8 inches to the top of his head while the reduced clown is about 5.8 inches.
The Poodles The reduced poodle is better sized for displays with regular sized lions and other animals. The regular poodle is about the size of a regular lion. The regular poodle is about 4 inches to his withers while the reduced is about 2.9 inches to his. The ringmaster and kangaroo are regular size.
