Star
The first ruff style, found on the very earliest clowns, was made
from muslin and cut with 15 star points. It was wrapped around the
clown's neck and glued together in the back.

Folded
The second ruff style, found on early clowns, attached around the
clown's neck with a single sewn heavy thread that ran through the inside
edge. The ruff was folded into an accordion look.

Banded
This style of ruff differs from the previous by its small woven
cloth band sewn around the neck. This style is common on later two-part
head clowns and all one-part head clowns. This ruff was made in
natural, red, or orange colors.
