The Clown Suits

Schoenhut only referred to two kinds of suits - the silk and the cotton. However, there were at least 15 different suit print designs used. Sometimes a clown's hat was made from the same design material and sometimes from one of the other designs.

Cards suit

This is the "playing cards" suit since its design consists of diamonds, clubs, spades, stars, with a moon man. This suit was very popular. The hat's design is the same as the suit except that the elements are smaller.

Strips

This very early clown wears a striped suit - blue stripes on the front, red on the back. Sometimes the colors are reversed. Glued to the front is the rare "Dresden footprint". This clown is shown in the 1903/1904 copyright catalog.

Diamonds

Collectors refer to this suit as the Harlequin. It is very bright and found on later 2-part and 1-part head clowns.

Silk

Schoenhut referred to this suit as silk. It does look somewhat like silk. The panels can be white, yellow, pink, green, or blue. Gold rickrack was applied down the front of the suit and around the rim of his hat.

Sunburst

The Sunburst suit was a very early and attractive design.

White

The three applied cloth or felt dots down the front of this suit are glued-on material. The hat matches the suit. The clown is from a ca 1910 collection.

White print

This simple red and white suit material was designed specifically for the clown. The red design was printed. The hat coordinates with the suit. The later one-part head clowns had suits with their cuffs overcast rather that folded under and tied to the arm or leg. This was probably a design change to reduce labor costs.

Patchwork costume

This costume was first described in 2003. Since then, at least seven clowns have been found fitted with this unusual outfit. It looks more like material that would have been used on the elephant's howdah blanket.
